Turn ye not unto idols, nor make to yourselves
molten gods:
I am the Lord your
God. Leviticus 19:4
- - -
Idols- persons or objects in which an individual pays
excessive homage and worship to, taking the place of God.
When we think of idols, we think of Hindus or
Buddhists sitting on a dirt floor, in a little straw house, burning incense to
their gods. We think of the ancient pagodas in the mountains of Asia and people
sacrificing to ‘please’ their gods. But actually, there are idols in every corner
of the earth and in most people’s hearts and homes.
Millions of people accumulate in their living
rooms, to view their star and most revered inspiration. They travel for miles
to go to this stadium and that arena. While it gratifies their current
pleasures, their heart is still truly not satisfied. So they move on to yet
another idol.
Anything
that we give more time and thought to (other than Christ) could be made an
idol. Our highest thoughts should constantly be centered on Jesus Christ the
One who unashamedly gave His life for us.
"These darling idols create an excitement, a morbid action of the nervous system; and after the immediate influence of the stimulants is gone, it lets down below par just to that degree that its stimulating properties elevated above par." –Counsels On Diet and Foods pg. 425
So turn ye not unto idols, but instead, turn ye
yourselves to God for He is our rock and our salvation.
